Tania Burgess murderer: Teen killer walks free on parole, name sealed

T

A teenage boy who stabbed a girl 48 times to death has walked free on Monday – now a 32-year-old man.

As he was just 16 at the time of the murder, the man’s identity has remained sealed, known only as “DL”.

The family of his victim, 15-year-old Tania Burgess, are calling for his identity to be unsealed.

“He gets to take no responsibility for anything that he‘s done,” her father Chris Burgess told Channel 9 on Sunday.

Tania’s mother Mandy Burgess said the family was concerned that a community would be unaware that a killer was walking free among them.

“What I care more about is that he will not hurt any other family again like he did to us,” she said.

Tania walked off a school bus and was heading through the carpark of Forresters Beach Resort on the NSW Central Coast on July 19, 2005, when the senseless attack occurred.

DL got off at the same stop and followed behind her before stabbing her with a knife 48 times.

He was arrested that evening and later sentenced to a minimum jail term of 17 years.

He has been eligible for parole since mid-2018.

“What happened to Tania, there is no justice,” Ms Burgess said.

“Nothing to what happened to her and what we saw that day is justice.”

A petition to the NSW Law Reform Commission to allow juvenile offenders who have committed the most serious crimes to be named has received almost 150,000 signatures.

In their submission to the commission, the Burgesses claim that “DL” continues to deny his involvement in Tania’s murder, including in his most recent parole application.

In June, the State Parole Authority granted DL parole with intensive supervision and strict conditions, saying it was “imperative for the protection of the community”.

The Serious Offenders Review Council strongly advised that with only 13 months left on DL’s sentence, parole with supervision was now “critical”.

Fifteen bail conditions were issued, including that he must wear an electronic monitoring ankle.
